About the Book

Among the many forms in which the classical science of Hatha Yoga has come down to us, none has traveled further or settled more deeply into the daily lives of practitioners around the world than the sequence you are about to study. Devised at Swami Sivananda’s ashram on the banks of the Ganga and carried westward by his disciple Swami Vishnu-devananda, the twelve basic postures distill a tradition of immense richness and complexity into a single, complete, and teachable form. It is not an abridgment in the diminishing sense of that word. It is a ghatastha yoga in miniature — the entire purificatory and energetic project of the older Hatha texts, shaped by a physician’s eye and a teacher’s patience into something a household practitioner could complete before breakfast and a lifetime of dedicated students could still be discovering after forty years.

This volume is the third in the Anantika Editions Classical Hatha Yoga Series. The first two volumes addressed the asana catalogues of the Gheranda Samhita directly — fourteen postures and then thirty-two, drawn in close textual fidelity from one of the great seventeenth-century manuals of the tradition. This book takes a different vantage point. Rather than following a single classical text outward, it follows a single modern lineage inward, tracing how Sivananda and Vishnu-devananda selected, ordered, and taught twelve postures that they judged sufficient, in combination, to address the whole human organism: the spine in every direction of its movement, the glandular system in its entirety, the nervous system in its need for both stimulation and rest. The result is a sequence whose architecture deserves as much attention as any single posture within it. Why the inversions come first. Why Matsyasana is placed exactly where it is. Why forward bends and backward bends are made to answer one another, posture by posture, until the spine has been carried through the full compass of its motion. These questions, and the answers the tradition gives to them, occupy a central place in the chapters that follow.

Of the thousands of yoga sequences practiced around the world today, none is more widely taught or more systematically complete than the twelve basic postures of the Sivananda tradition. Millions of practitioners perform this sequence every morning. Very few know why the postures appear in the order they do — why the inversions come first, why Matsyasana is placed exactly where it is, why forward bends and backward bends are made to answer one another until the spine has traveled the full compass of its motion. The Sivananda Canonical Sequence: The 12 Basic Postures is a book about those questions, and the answers the tradition gives to them.

This is the third volume in the Anantika Editions Classical Hatha Yoga Series. Where the first two volumes drew their postures directly from the Gheranda Samhita — fourteen and then thirty-two asanas — this volume follows a single modern lineage inward, tracing how Swami Sivananda, a physician turned renunciant, and his disciple Swami Vishnu-devananda selected, ordered, and taught twelve postures they judged sufficient to address the whole human organism: the spine in every direction, the glandular system in its entirety, the nervous system in its need for both stimulation and rest.

Each asana receives its own extended treatment: historical context, classical and contemporary technique, benefits attributed by the tradition and by modern observation, and contraindications. Where a claim belongs to traditional teaching rather than settled physiology, the book says so plainly — presenting the classical view with the respect it has earned, without dressing it in the borrowed authority of modern science.

A progressive four-week training program integrates all twelve postures with the principal pranayama techniques of the classical tradition — Kapalabhati, Anuloma Viloma, Bhastrika, Ujjayi, Sheetali, and Bhramari — following classical energetic pairing principles. From the fourth week onward, every session concludes with seated meditation.

Beyond the postures, the volume situates the twelve within the larger framework that gives them their purpose: the history and philosophy of yoga, the six classical schools of Indian thought, prana and the nadis, the stages of samadhi, the shatkarmas, meditation, and diet. A four-tradition comparison maps the Sivananda sequence against the Gheranda Samhita fourteen, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika fifteen, and Vishnu-devananda's codification.

This book is for the beginner taking up these postures for the first time and for the experienced practitioner who wants to understand why the tradition arranged them as it did. It is for the teacher who seeks primary-source grounding beneath familiar studio cues. And it is for any reader who senses that a sequence devised by a physician-sage on the banks of the Ganga nearly a century ago deserves to be understood, and not merely repeated.
