About the Book

This book was written because classical Hatha Yoga deserves to be read in its own voice. The fourteen asanas presented here are not a modern selection. They are the first fourteen postures taught in the second chapter of the Gheranda Samhita, one of the three foundational manuals of the Hatha Yoga tradition, preserved in the order their author set down centuries ago. No postures have been added to suit contemporary taste, and none have been removed for being unfamiliar or difficult. The sequence belongs to the text, not to us.

Much of what circulates today under the name of yoga bears little resemblance to the tradition described in these pages. The classical sources are precise, demanding, and remarkably coherent. They speak of asana not as exercise but as the disciplined preparation of the body for pranayama, concentration, and meditation — a preparation inseparable from the philosophical framework of Samkhya, Vedanta, and the eight-limbed path set forth by Patanjali. This book attempts to honor that coherence by presenting the postures within the full context of the system to which they belong: its philosophy, its anatomy of breath and subtle energy, its ethics, and its ultimate aim.

We have relied throughout on primary Sanskrit sources — the Gheranda Samhita, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Yoga Sutras, and the Bhagavad Gita among them — and have tried to let those sources speak with as little modern interpolation as possible. Where editorial choices were necessary, they have been made in favor of fidelity to the classical texts over conformity to modern convention.

If this volume has achieved its purpose, the reader will close it not with the feeling of having consumed a product, but with the sense of having been introduced to a living tradition — one that asks something of those who enter it, and that repays honest effort with discoveries no summary can anticipate.

The remaining volumes of this series continue the work begun here. May they serve the tradition as faithfully as this one has tried to do.

Thousands of yoga books line the shelves of studios, libraries, and online retailers. The vast majority begin and end with the modern postural tradition — sequences designed for fitness, flexibility, or stress relief, detached from the philosophical and energetic framework that gave them meaning. The Canonical Asanas: The Core Group of 14 Postures is not one of those books.

This volume returns to the source. Its fourteen postures are drawn directly from the Gheranda Samhita, one of the three foundational manuals of the classical Hatha Yoga tradition, composed in late seventeenth-century Bengal. The Gheranda Samhita catalogues thirty-two asanas — the largest canon in any classical text — and situates them within a sevenfold discipline that begins with purification, moves through posture and breath, and culminates in samadhi. The fourteen presented here form a coherent and complete practice system: seated meditation postures, dynamic backbends, the primary spinal rotation, the consummate forward fold, the principal arm balance, and the closing restorative posture. Together they constitute a full cycle of physical and energetic cultivation, as the tradition itself intended.

Each asana is presented twice. The first pass offers a concise rendering — classical technique, traditional purpose, and principal benefits as the source text frames them. The second is an expanded practitioner's guide with step-by-step instructions, alignment cues, physiological detail, contraindications, and a suggested pairing with one of the eight canonical pranayamas of the Gheranda Samhita. A structured seven-day training program integrates the postures with their pranayama pairings into a weekly sadhana.

But the book does not stop at technique. It opens with foundational chapters on the history of yoga — from the Indus Valley seals through the Vedas, the Upanishads, and Patanjali — and on the six classical schools of Indian philosophy that underpin the entire tradition. Supplementary chapters address pranayama and its ratios, the seven chakras, the shatkarmas, meditation, and the yogic approach to diet. A four-tradition comparison table maps the Gheranda Samhita fourteen against the Hatha Yoga Pradipika fifteen, the Sivananda canonical sequence, and Vishnu-devananda's twelve basic postures, charting the transmission of the asana tradition from its Sanskrit sources through its twentieth-century systematization.

This book is for the practitioner who wants to know not only how a posture is performed but why it exists — what it was designed to do to the body, the breath, and the mind. It is for the teacher who seeks primary-source grounding beyond studio convention. It is for the student of Indian philosophy who recognizes that asana, properly understood, is not exercise but preparation: the shaping of a vessel fit to receive the subtler practices that follow. And it is for any serious reader who believes that a tradition five thousand years in the making deserves to be studied on its own terms.
